Visions du Réel 2027 Opens Submissions for Oscar-Qualifying Short Documentary Competition

The major Swiss documentary festival is accepting international shorts of up to 30 minutes for its April 2027 edition, with an early deadline of 2 November and final deadline of 15 December 2026.

Visions du Réel has officially opened submissions for its 58th edition, giving documentary filmmakers around the world just over three months to enter work for one of the festival’s international competitions.

The 2027 festival will take place from 9–18 April 2027 in Nyon, Switzerland, with submissions opening on 8 September 2026.

For short filmmakers, the key opportunity is the International Medium Length and Short Film Competition, which accepts creative documentary shorts of up to 30 minutes.

The competition is Academy Award-qualifying. The winner of Visions du Réel’s Best Short Film Award becomes eligible for consideration for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film, subject to the Academy’s rules and submission by the film’s rights holder.

The festival’s early submission deadline is 2 November 2026, while the final deadline is 15 December 2026.

Short documentaries can be up to 30 minutes

Visions du Réel defines a short film as a work running up to 30 minutes.

Films between 31 and 70 minutes are classified by the festival as medium-length films and compete within the same International Medium Length and Short Film Competition.

The festival is centred on creative documentary cinema rather than conventional genre boundaries. Its programme regularly includes observational documentaries, essay films, experimental non-fiction and hybrid approaches to reality-based filmmaking.

Both emerging and established filmmakers can compete.

The festival says submitted competition films must have completed production within the 12 months preceding their festival screening.

Premiere status is especially important

Filmmakers considering Visions du Réel should pay close attention to its premiere requirements before submitting elsewhere.

Films entered into the International Medium Length and Short Film Competition must be available for a:

• World premiere
• International premiere or
• European premiere

A film that is only available for a Swiss premiere will not be considered for this competition.

Visions du Réel also explicitly states that it prioritises world premieres, followed by international and European premieres.

That makes festival sequencing important. A documentary filmmaker targeting Visions du Réel may need to avoid screenings or online availability that would eliminate the necessary premiere status before April.

Best Short Film winner receives CHF 4,000

The International Medium Length and Short Film Competition carries several cash awards.

The Best Short Film Award is worth CHF 4,000.

A separate Youth Jury Prize for a Short Film provides CHF 2,000.

Medium-length films compete for a CHF 6,000 main award and a CHF 3,000 Youth Jury award.

Beyond the cash prize, the Best Short Film winner’s Academy Award eligibility is potentially the competition’s most important benefit for filmmakers planning an awards campaign.

Selected films enter the festival’s professional Film Market

Selection also provides an industry opportunity beyond public screenings.

Films chosen for the festival are automatically included free of charge in the Visions du Réel Film Market, where accredited buyers and film professionals can watch them during the festival and through the professional online platform.

That can provide selected short documentaries with exposure to festival programmers, sales agents, distributors, broadcasters and other documentary-industry professionals.

Selected filmmakers in the International Medium Length and Short Film Competition are also invited to Nyon.

Visions du Réel covers accommodation and meals for one filmmaker per film. For co-directed films, the festival provides a double room and meals for both filmmakers.

Travel expenses are generally not covered, although the festival says it can assist filmmakers in identifying national organisations that may offer travel support.

First and student shorts have another route through Opening Scenes

Emerging documentary filmmakers should also look at Opening Scenes, another section within the festival’s official selection.

Opening Scenes is specifically intended for first short films and shorts produced within an academic context.

Selected filmmakers do more than screen their films. They also participate in the Opening Scenes Lab, a professional programme connected with VdR–Industry.

The same world, international or European premiere requirement applies.

For student filmmakers and directors completing their first documentary short, this may therefore be a more appropriate route into Visions du Réel than viewing the festival purely through its main international competition.

Generative AI use must be disclosed

There is also a notable requirement in the festival’s newly published 2027 regulations.

Any use of generative artificial intelligence during filmmaking must be disclosed in the director’s statement submitted with the film.

Filmmakers must explain the nature of the AI use and identify the elements affected, including where generative tools were used to create or alter images, sounds, voices or text.

Visions du Réel says it can remove a film from the selection if generative AI use was not disclosed beforehand.

This does not amount to a prohibition on AI-assisted filmmaking, but it makes transparency a formal condition of participation.

Submission requirements

Applications are made through Visions du Réel’s online submission platform.

A submission fee applies to each film, with the festival stating that the amount varies according to the submission timeline. The published 2027 film regulations reviewed by Indie Shorts Mag do not list the exact fee amounts, so filmmakers should confirm the current charge shown in the official submission portal before completing payment.

Filmmakers must provide a password-protected online screener that remains accessible through the end of March 2027 and permits downloading for the festival selection committee.

Films must be submitted in their original language with English subtitles where required. Existing French subtitles should also be supplied.
