HollyShorts MENA will run in Dubai from 14–17 January 2027, with submissions open through November and a newly announced prize designed to give a regional short film a US theatrical run and a route towards Academy Awards consideration.
HollyShorts is expanding its Dubai festival into HollyShorts MENA, broadening the event beyond the UAE as it looks to create a stronger bridge between short filmmakers in the Middle East and North Africa and the international industry.
The expanded festival will take place in Dubai from 14–17 January 2027, following the inaugural HollyShorts Dubai edition held in December 2025.
Alongside the regional expansion, HollyShorts has announced a new Grand Prize that would give a winning short film a seven-day commercial theatrical release in either Los Angeles or New York, followed by the submission of the relevant paperwork to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The initiative is designed to give an eligible regional short a potential theatrical route towards Academy Awards qualification rather than limiting the prize to another festival screening.
For filmmakers in the region, that represents a considerably more substantial opportunity than the first Dubai edition offered.
HollyShorts Dubai becomes HollyShorts MENA
The festival will continue to be based in Dubai, but its scope is expanding across the Middle East and North Africa.
The newly announced regional focus specifically identifies filmmakers from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Morocco among those the initiative aims to support.
HollyShorts says the festival will combine screenings with industry panels and networking opportunities involving regional filmmakers and international entertainment professionals.
The second edition is scheduled for four days rather than the three-day inaugural event.
HollyShorts’ official calendar currently lists the festival from Thursday, 14 January to Sunday, 17 January 2027.
New Grand Prize includes a seven-day US theatrical release
The most significant change is the new Grand Prize announced alongside the MENA expansion.
According to the announcement, the winning short will receive a guaranteed seven-day commercial theatrical release in either Los Angeles or New York.
HollyShorts would then handle the required Academy paperwork following that release.
A qualifying commercial theatrical run is one of the established routes through which eligible short films can meet Academy Awards entry requirements, alongside winning designated awards at qualifying festivals.
That means the prize is potentially valuable for a filmmaker whose short has not already secured qualification through another festival.
It should not, however, be interpreted as an automatic Oscar nomination or even automatic placement on the final Academy shortlist. The film would still need to satisfy the applicable Academy rules and proceed through the normal awards process.
Current FilmFreeway listing has not yet fully caught up with the announcement
There is one important point filmmakers should be aware of.
At the time of publication, the official HollyShorts Dubai FilmFreeway listing has not yet been completely updated to reflect the newly announced MENA branding and theatrical Grand Prize.
The listing still describes the event as HollyShorts Dubai and states that the Grand Prize winner receives an automatic slot at the 23rd Annual HollyShorts Film Festival in Hollywood in 2027.
That differs from the fresh HollyShorts MENA announcement describing the seven-day Los Angeles or New York theatrical release.
The FilmFreeway page does, however, confirm the current 2027 festival dates, submission deadlines and fees.
Filmmakers particularly interested in the new theatrical prize should therefore check the portal for updated rules before submitting and confirm which award structure applies to their category.
Submissions remain open through November
The festival opened submissions in December 2025 and is currently accepting short films for its January 2027 edition.
The next major deadline is 2 October 2026.

The current regular submission fee is $45 for standard entrants and $40 for students.
Late submissions rise to $55 standard / $50 student, while the extended deadline costs $65 / $60.
Both general short films and student shorts are currently listed.
Live-action, animation and documentary shorts are part of the regional push
The MENA announcement says filmmakers can submit live-action, animated and documentary shorts.
That makes the expansion relevant across the major forms of short filmmaking rather than positioning HollyShorts MENA around one specific genre.
The festival’s broader organisation also has a significant position on the international short-film circuit.
Founded in 2005, HollyShorts operates its flagship festival at the TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood and is an Academy Awards and BAFTA-qualifying festival.
Its 2026 Hollywood edition screened more than 400 shorts selected from thousands of submissions.
The organisation has subsequently developed events beyond Los Angeles, including HollyShorts London and its Dubai programme.

The first Dubai edition took place in 2025
The inaugural HollyShorts Dubai was held from 12–14 December 2025 at Studio One Hotel.
Neo Apelian’s Karayr won Best of Fest, while Largo by Max Burgoyne-Moore and Salvatore Scarpa received Best International.
Other winners included Abdul Majid Abbasi’s Kareem for Best Drama and Nitesh Marwaha’s Lov U Dead for Best Director.
For that edition, the Best of Fest winner received automatic entry into the competition at the subsequent HollyShorts Film Festival in Los Angeles.
The newly announced MENA expansion therefore represents a meaningful change in ambition for the second edition, particularly if the US theatrical-release prize replaces or expands upon that existing pathway.

The expansion is particularly relevant because it attempts to address a persistent challenge for filmmakers in the region: converting local or regional festival recognition into meaningful international industry access.
A guaranteed commercial theatrical run in Los Angeles or New York could make the Grand Prize substantially more valuable than a conventional festival trophy, provided the final rules confirm the qualification pathway described in the announcement.
With more than seven weeks remaining before the extended deadline, filmmakers across the eligible MENA markets have enough time to assess the opportunity. The next thing to watch is an update to HollyShorts’ official submission rules formally incorporating the new regional eligibility and Grand Prize structure.
