The Basingstoke festival has joined BAFTA’s qualifying-festival network, giving eligible British short films selected for Exit 6 a potential new route towards the BAFTA Film Awards.
With its newly minted BAFTA-qualifying status, Exit 6 Film Festival cements its standing as a serious player on the UK short-film circuit, just as it throws open the gates for 2027 submissions.
FilmFreeway now bestows upon Exit 6 the dual distinction of BAFTA and BIFA qualification. The festival’s twelfth outing is slated for 17–18 September 2027 in Basingstoke, with the submission window having opened on 27 July 2026.
What the qualification means
For British short filmmakers, selection at a BAFTA-qualifying festival can contribute towards eligibility for the British Short Film or British Short Animation categories.
However, a festival selection does not automatically guarantee a BAFTA entry or nomination. Filmmakers must still satisfy the applicable nationality, production, screening-period and submission requirements contained in BAFTA’s rulebook for the relevant awards year. BAFTA currently directs short filmmakers to a separate British Short Film and British Short Animation rulebook and qualifying-festival resources.
This new badge of honor renders Exit 6 especially attractive to British filmmakers plotting a strategic festival campaign. International entrants, meanwhile, remain welcome to vie for laurels and the ever-elusive industry spotlight.
Exit 6’s 2027 submission dates
Submissions for the 2027 festival are being accepted through FilmFreeway.
The currently listed deadlines are:
- Opening date: 27 July 2026
- Early-bird deadline: 21 October 2026
- Regular deadline: 12 May 2027
- Late deadline: 16 June 2027
- Notification date: 14 July 2027
- Festival dates: 17–18 September 2027
Early-bird hopefuls will find the entry fee set at $25, with the usual nod to FilmFreeway Gold members. Those who dally can expect the price to climb to $35 and $45 as deadlines approach.
The festival accepts films from any country across comedy, drama, horror and thriller, science fiction and fantasy, animation, documentary, and its more experimental Maverick category.
Running times are capped at 20 minutes, credits included, and only films completed after 1 October 2025 need apply. Premiere status is not a prerequisite, nor is online exclusivity—a rare nod to the realities of digital distribution. The one hard line: fully AI-generated films need not submit.
A two-day festival for filmmakers
Exit 6 bills itself as a filmmaker-led, volunteer-powered affair. The 2027 edition promises two days of industry discourse and screenings at Vue Cinemas in Basingstoke—a blend designed to appeal to both the aspiring auteur and the seasoned festival veteran.
Selected filmmakers are invited to participate in Q&As. The festival’s Industry Day has previously covered subjects including commissioning, BFI development funding, festival strategy, distribution after the festival circuit, and the legal and financial considerations involved in independent filmmaking.
Top honors include Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Performance, Best Editing, Best Screenplay, and the ever-democratic Audience Choice. Every submission is guaranteed a minimum of three sets of discerning eyes before judgment is passed.
Exit 6’s 2026 edition
Before the curtain rises on its expanded 2027 edition, Exit 6 will stage its eleventh outing on 19 September 2026 at Vue Festival Place in Basingstoke.
For those unable to make the pilgrimage, the 2026 program will stream online from 12 to 26 September at a modest £6. A physical pass for the 19 September screening day commands £23.
For British filmmakers chasing that elusive qualification route, and for international auteurs in search of a filmmaker-centric UK showcase, Exit 6’s newly acquired status makes its 2027 submission cycle a date to circle on the calendar.
