The free festival takes place on 13 February, with December submissions, a ‘Necklace’ signature item and restrictions on generative-AI storytelling.

Tropfest will return to The Domain in Sydney on Saturday 13 February 2027, with its published entry guidance setting limits on generative AI’s role in competing shorts.

The outdoor event will be free, with registration required. Screenings begin at sundown; the final running order, entry arrangements and precise gate-opening time are still to come. Audiences outside Sydney can watch a livestream.

Planning a Tropfest entry

Submissions open on 1 December 2026. The early-bird deadline is 22 December at 10 pm AEDT, with an A$65 fee; the final deadline is 5 January 2027 at 10 pm AEDT, at A$95.

Films must run no longer than seven minutes, including credits, incorporate the 2027 signature item, ‘Necklace’, and premiere publicly at Tropfest. Directors must be Australian citizens or permanent residents to compete; international filmmakers may enter for out-of-competition screenings.

Where the AI boundary sits

AI assistance with tasks such as audio clean-up or editing is permitted. Films that rely substantially on generative AI for core storytelling elements are ineligible. Entrants must disclose their use of AI tools.

For filmmakers, that distinction matters before production begins, not just when an entry form is completed. Document how you use tools, and check any uncertain creative workflow with the organizers.

Prizes and next steps

The CommBank Tropfest Emerging Filmmakers Fund offers A$50,000, A$30,000 and A$20,000 for the top three places. Roughcut’s educational programme runs at NIDA from 10–12 February.

Filmmakers can start developing their shorts now, but entries aren’t open yet. Check the forthcoming entry form and final terms before submitting.
