The Huesca festival is accepting mountain, adventure and nature shorts until 8 November, with a €1 festival entry fee and screenings planned for February 2027.

Pirineos Mountain Film Festival has opened submissions for its sixth edition, giving filmmakers until 8 November 2026 to enter short films about mountains, adventure and nature. The festival will take place in Huesca, Spain, from 22 to 27 February 2027.

Announced on 8 October, the call welcomes work from around the world and carries a €1 festival registration fee, although submission-platform charges may be added. Three cash awards total €6,000, alongside five further award categories.

Which films are eligible?

The competition accepts fiction, documentary and animation shorts running no longer than 30 minutes. Eligible films must have been made after 1 January 2024 and address the festival’s mountain, adventure or nature themes. Tourism-oriented and advertising films are excluded.

For preselection, films should be submitted in their original language. If that language is neither Spanish nor English, the rules require Spanish subtitles, preferably, or English subtitles. Filmmakers may enter more than one work.

Entries are accepted through Festhome or FilmFreeway. The regulations give the closing time as 23:59 on 8 November 2026 but do not specify a time zone, so entrants should check the deadline displayed by their chosen platform and avoid leaving submission until the final hours.

Eight awards and a route beyond Huesca

The cash prizes are €3,000 for Best Short Film, €1,500 for Best Adventure and Sports Short Film, and €1,500 for Best Culture and Nature Short Film.

The remaining categories recognise animation, screenplay, the audience’s choice, an Ibero-American short and a short filmed in the Pyrenees. These carry diplomas and/or trophies from the official venues. The jury may also award special mentions or leave a category unawarded.

Competition screenings are scheduled at Huesca’s Teatro Olimpia from 22 to 24 February. The 2027 touring programme will be presented on 27 February at the Carlos Saura auditorium in the Palacio de Congresos de Huesca.

That touring selection will subsequently travel to Barbastro, Benasque, Boltaña and Tarbes before its wider national and international circuit. The regulations provide for separate agreements with rights holders over participation, licensing and royalties. A competition entry should therefore not be read as a guarantee of a touring slot.

What selected filmmakers should prepare

Selected teams will need to supply screening masters by 16 December 2026. Masters must be free of burnt-in subtitles; films whose original language is not Spanish require a separate Spanish or English SRT file. This screening requirement is distinct from the preselection subtitle rules.

An electronic press kit should include three film stills or representative photographs, a director photograph and a director biography/filmography of no more than 600 characters. The festival will communicate the detailed delivery arrangements after selection.

Filmmakers in conflict-affected locations or facing restrictions on online payments can contact peliculas@pirineosmff.com about their circumstances. The announcement describes case-by-case assistance, including possible fee exemption, rather than an automatic waiver.

A focused opportunity for specialist shorts

For filmmakers working in mountain, outdoor and environmental storytelling, the combination of a small festival fee, cash awards and a touring programme makes this a targeted opportunity. The useful next step is to check the current 2027 regulations, confirm the film’s production date and subtitle requirements, and submit through the festival’s linked platforms before 8 November.
