Vimeo Doubles Short Film Grant to $300,000, Five Filmmakers to Receive $60,000 Each

Vimeo’s second annual Short Film Grant will award five emerging filmmakers $60,000 each, alongside Panavision equipment, industry mentorship and distribution support. Applications open on 21 September.

Vimeo has announced the return of its Short Film Grant, doubling the programme’s total production funding from $150,000 last year to $300,000 for its 2026 edition.

Five emerging filmmakers will each receive $60,000 to produce an original short film, compared with the $30,000 awarded to each of the five inaugural recipients in 2025.

Applications for the new round will open on 21 September 2026.

The grant also expands its production support this year through partnerships with Panavision, Other World Computing (OWC), AJA and ShotDeck.

Five filmmakers will receive $60,000 each

The $300,000 fund will be divided equally among five selected filmmakers.

Each recipient will receive:

• $60,000 in production funding
• Access to Panavision camera packages
• OWC storage for the duration of production
• Access to ShotDeck’s cinematic-image library and creative resources
• A Vimeo Advanced subscription
• Distribution support through Vimeo
• One-on-one mentorship from members of the selection jury and Vimeo’s Curation Team

The increase effectively doubles both the programme’s total cash fund and the amount available to each individual project.

For an emerging filmmaker producing a short independently, $60,000 represents a substantial production budget compared with many filmmaking grants that provide only partial or finishing finance.

Applications open September 21

Vimeo says submissions for the second edition will open on 21 September 2026.

At the time of publication, the company’s main Short Film Grant page still displays information and official rules from the inaugural 2025 programme. The newly announced 2026 rules and final application deadline are therefore not yet fully reflected on the public grant page.

Filmmakers interested in applying should avoid assuming that every eligibility requirement from 2025 will remain unchanged and check the updated official rules once the new submission round opens.

The announcement does, however, confirm that the programme is once again aimed at emerging filmmakers developing original short films.

Kogonada and Josephine Decker join the 2026 jury

The filmmakers selected for the grants will also receive mentorship from this year’s jury.

The 2026 selection panel includes:

• Kogonada — filmmaker behind Columbus, After Yang and A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.
• Josephine Decker — director whose work includes Madeline’s Madeline and Shirley.
• Pete Ohs — independent filmmaker and director.
• Sarah Winshall — producer whose independent film credits include projects across the festival circuit.
• Jomo Fray, ASC — cinematographer whose work includes independent film and television productions.

Vimeo’s Curation Team will provide additional support throughout development and production.

Panavision replaces Nikon and RED as principal camera partner

One of the biggest changes from the inaugural programme is the production partnership.

The first Vimeo Short Film Grant was presented with Nikon and RED, giving selected filmmakers access to cameras including RED’s V-RAPTOR [X] and KOMODO-X alongside Nikon mirrorless equipment.

For 2026, Panavision will provide camera packages to the selected projects.

OWC is supplying production storage support, while ShotDeck will give filmmakers access to its searchable library of cinematic stills that can be used for visual development, mood boards and production references.

The expanded group of partners means the grant functions as more than a cash award, with equipment and production resources included alongside the $60,000 funding.

More than 3,100 filmmakers applied in the first year

Vimeo says its inaugural grant received more than 3,100 submissions.

Five projects were ultimately selected:

• Andrew J Rodriguez — Spaceboi
• Annie Ning — The Only Man to Ever Exist
• Carmen Pedrero — I Remember the House Was Red
• John C Kelley — The Ineffable Hum
• Sofía Camargo — La Selva

Each filmmaker received $30,000 in the inaugural round alongside equipment, mentorship and distribution support.

The films entered production between July and December 2025, with Vimeo planning releases and screenings for the completed projects.

Vimeo is increasing its investment in short filmmakers

The doubling of the fund comes at a time when production financing remains one of the biggest obstacles facing independent short filmmakers.

A $60,000 award is large enough to finance a substantial independent short rather than functioning solely as a development or finishing grant.

The structure is also notable because the five recipients receive equal amounts instead of competing for one larger headline prize.

Vimeo has historically had a strong relationship with independent short filmmaking through Staff Picks and its filmmaker community, and the expanded grant represents a more direct investment in producing new work.
