Vimeo Launches Short Film Grant to Support Emerging Filmmakers - Indie Shorts Mag News

Program provides up to $150,000 to support up-and-coming filmmakers and drive a new generation of talent.

Vimeo, renowned for its innovative video platform for creators and enterprises, has announced the launch of the first-ever “Vimeo Short Film Grant presented by Nikon | RED.” This pioneering initiative aims to empower emerging filmmakers by providing significant funding, mentorship, and advanced equipment to bring their creative visions to life.

Details of the Grant

The grant program will award five filmmakers with $30,000 each, totaling $150,000 in funding. These funds will support the production of short films with the additional benefit of one-on-one mentorship from industry experts and the Vimeo Curation Team. The grant package also includes:

  • Professional Equipment: Access to the latest Z CINEMA line, featuring V-RAPTOR [X] and KOMODO-X cinema cameras with Z mount options, and Nikon’s mirrorless cameras, including the Z9, Z8, and Z6III. This equipment ensures that the films produced will meet the highest technical standards.
  • Vimeo Subscription and Distribution Support: Each recipient will receive a Vimeo Standard subscription and dedicated promotion at in-person screenings in New York City and Los Angeles hosted by Vimeo.

Prestigious Jury and Selection Criteria

Winners will be chosen by a distinguished jury consisting of Vimeo Staff Picks alumni and celebrated filmmakers such as David Lowery, Charlotte Wells, Sean Wang, Savanah Leaf, and cinematographer Adam Bricker, ASC. The selection criteria will focus on:

  • Originality
  • Artistic merit
  • Feasibility of project execution

Statements from Industry Leaders

Philip Moyer, CEO of Vimeo, highlighted the platform’s commitment to nurturing new talent:

“For two decades, Vimeo has served and inspired millions of filmmakers and film enthusiasts around the world. We are incredibly proud to partner with industry leaders, Nikon and RED, on this new grant program to accelerate the future of storytelling and launch a new generation of filmmakers.”

Filmmaker and jury member Charlotte Wells added:

“Short films are a form of their own, but they’re also an essential entryway into the feature film industry. For years, Vimeo has given an impressive platform to short form work, supporting emerging filmmakers (including me), and in turn, I’m grateful to be able to support their inaugural short film grant.”

Savannah Leaf, another grant program mentor, emphasized the value of mentorship:

“Mentorship is a powerful way to navigate the challenges of filmmaking, offering the support and confidence to create. Vimeo has helped me build a community of peers and mentors. I’m excited to collaborate with Vimeo and emerging filmmakers to continue fostering the community that first gave me the courage to direct.”

Naoki Onozato, President and CEO of Nikon Inc., expressed enthusiasm for the partnership:

“Nikon and RED are thrilled to partner with Vimeo on this important initiative. We’re excited to see the incredible films that will be created through this grant.”

Keiji Oishi, CEO of RED Digital Cinema, echoed the sentiment:

“Independent filmmaking is a vibrant community that amplifies fresh voices and unique stories. RED is excited to support these promising artists at the beginning of their cinematic journey.”

Submission Details

Submissions for the “Vimeo Short Film Grant presented by Nikon | RED” will open on March 10, 2025. Winners will be notified by July 7, with projects commencing by July 2025. Filmmakers are encouraged to visit Vimeo Short Film Grant for official rules, including eligibility, conditions, prize descriptions, and complete details.
