Developing Agents: A Layered Narrative On Aspirations & Fantasies

Developing Agents - Short Film Review

Written, directed and edited by Allen Childress, Developing Agents is a 23:11-minute long experimental short that explores the mind of an aspiring filmmaker. Swaying between grainy textured black-and-white frames to coloured, the film, while being experimental in its own approach, further delves into the complexities of mind, psyche and creative genius. A film that requires multiple viewing to fully grasp its intent, Developing Agents is raw, brutal and honest in its attempt at understanding non-linear concepts.

Eddie nurtures the dream to get into a prestigious film school. Does he have what it takes to meet the administrator’s expectations? To what extent is he willing to push himself? Can those around him resonate with his ambitions? These are the prime questions the film attempts to answer. Well divided into four segments, I – This is Eddie, II – Eddie Goes To An Experimental Film, III – Pleasure Induced Loss Of Control, and finally, IV – Epilogue, The College Administrator, Childress makes it amply clear for the audience to understand the trajectory of the narrative.

Rob “the blob” Miller and Daniel Wigley’s composition stays throughout the narrative. The cuts neat and at times abrupt, attempts at engaging the audience into experiencing the turmoil Eddie faces at not being understood. Falling short of his own expectations, each attempt of his, at making a film that might eventually get him that elusive entry to his dream college begins to take a turn for the worse. Running close to abject destruction, Eddie begins treading the self-destructive path of pursuit for perfection.

It is interesting that Childress makes no attempt to soften the blow. The scenes get exceedingly graphic and as the audience we begin to worry for Eddie and his blind aspirations. When his friends voice both concern and perhaps mockery, the unbecoming of the artist becomes complete.

Developing Agents - Short Film Review

Developing Agents is a mirror shown to the artist, the muse, the myth and the beauty in between. It is ultimately the truth unmasked for an audience unprepared.
