Studio Heartbreak’s 15-minute animated short The Lovers is moving from the festival circuit to a free global online release after a $410,205 crowdfunding campaign and screenings at Annecy, Fantasia and HollyShorts.
Independent animation project The Lovers is taking an increasingly familiar route for ambitious short films: crowdfunding the production, building a festival run and then releasing directly to audiences online.
Studio Heartbreak released the 15-minute animated short on YouTube on 29 August 2026 at 8pm Central Time.
The online release follows a successful crowdfunding campaign that raised $410,205 from 7,625 Kickstarter backers.
That made The Lovers the fifth-highest-funded Film & Video project on Kickstarter in 2023, according to Kickstarter’s own year-end figures.
From a $410,205 Kickstarter campaign to major festivals
Studio Heartbreak originally introduced The Lovers through Kickstarter in 2023.
The campaign significantly exceeded its initial fundraising target and ultimately attracted more than 7,600 supporters.
Rather than relying on a traditional studio or established intellectual property, the team used the campaign to finance an original independent animated production.
The completed film went on to become an official selection at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival before screening at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival.
Fantasia presented the film as part of its Things That Go Bump in the East programme on 22 July.
The film later won the Gold Audience Award for Best Animated Short at Fantasia.
It also screened at the 2026 HollyShorts Film Festival in Los Angeles.
What is The Lovers about?
Directed by Alice Mao and Sophia Paez, The Lovers is a 15-minute animated fantasy, romance and horror short set against a dark interpretation of the Philippines.
The film follows Sara, a seafood chef struggling with the expectations surrounding her late father’s reputation and her family restaurant.
As preparations intensify for an important dinner, Sara encounters Sirena, a mythical creature intended to become part of the feast.
Their encounter develops into an unexpected attraction.
The film stars Vanille Velasquez as Sara and Dawn M. Bennett as Sirena.
Fantasia lists Alice Mao as a director, writer and producer, with Sophia Paez directing and Myxo Mycota editing the film.
The film’s festival run included a Fantasia audience award
At the 2026 Fantasia International Film Festival, The Lovers received the Gold Audience Award for Best Animated Short.
Fantasia’s official results placed it ahead of Echo by Asuka Dokai, which received Silver, and Radheya Jang’s Trading Cards, which took Bronze.
For an independently financed animated film, the combination of major animation-festival exposure and a public-voted festival prize provides a useful case study in how crowdfunding can feed into a wider festival strategy.
The project also arrived with an audience already attached to it.
Thousands of Kickstarter backers had followed the film during production, while Studio Heartbreak continued sharing development material and production updates online.
Why the free release matters
Short films often face a difficult decision at the end of their festival run.
Keeping a film offline can preserve eligibility for festivals with premiere or online-availability restrictions, but it also limits how many people can actually see the work.
Once the priority festival window has passed, filmmakers increasingly use platforms such as YouTube or Vimeo to give their shorts a second life.
The Lovers is taking that route while its festival momentum remains relatively recent.
Instead of moving behind a transactional rental or subscription platform, Studio Heartbreak is making the complete film available free of charge and without advertising.
That gives the project the opportunity to convert some of the attention generated through crowdfunding and festivals into a much larger online audience.
A notable independent-animation crowdfunding case
The fundraising figures themselves make The Lovers unusual.
Kickstarter reported $410,205 pledged by 7,625 backers, placing it among the platform’s biggest Film & Video campaigns of 2023.
For filmmakers, particularly animators facing long production timelines and substantial labour costs, the project demonstrates an alternative financing model built around developing an audience before the film is completed.
Crowdfunding at this scale is far from typical, however, and the result should not be treated as representative of what most independent shorts can expect to raise.
What makes The Lovers more useful as a case study is the full trajectory: community-building and crowdfunding were followed by production, recognised festival screenings, an audience award and finally a direct online release.
Where and when to watch The Lovers
The Lovers will be released on Studio Heartbreak’s YouTube channel on:
29 August 2026 — 8pm Central Time / 9pm Eastern Time / 6pm Pacific Time
For audiences in the Philippines, the release is:
30 August 2026 — 9am Philippine Time
The complete short will be available to watch free.
For independent filmmakers, its performance after release will be worth watching. The project has already demonstrated that an original short can build a sizeable audience before completion; its YouTube release will now test how effectively that community can translate into viewers once the film becomes freely accessible worldwide.
