India’s Oscar-qualifying short-film festival returns for its 16th edition with theatre and online screenings, 11 competition sections, a new filmmaker market and a film-school conference.
The Bengaluru International Short Film Festival has announced the main details of its 16th edition, with in-person screenings scheduled across Bengaluru from 14 to 16 August 2026 and online screenings running from 6 to 16 August.
The festival’s 2026 edition expands beyond screenings with two new filmmaker-focused initiatives: the Discovery Film Market, designed to connect projects with producers, distributors and festival professionals, and the Echoes Film School Conference, bringing together students, educators and industry practitioners.
For short filmmakers, the announcement is notable not only because BISFF is recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a qualifying festival, but also because its new industry programme creates opportunities around pitching, distribution, co-production and professional networking.
Festival dates and access
BISFF’s main theatre programme will take place in Bengaluru from 14–16 August 2026.
Selected films will also stream through the festival’s online platform from 6–16 August, although BISFF notes that not every title may be available online. Its existing viewing guidance states that online screenings are geo-restricted to India.
The festival is currently offering the following registration options:
- Cinephile pass: ₹300 for students, senior citizens and film-society members, including online access
- Festival delegate pass: ₹500, including theatre screenings and online access
- Echoes Film School Conference pass: ₹450 for student participants, including online access
- Discovery Film Market pass: ₹1,500, including access to the buyer-and-seller meeting, the wider festival and online screenings
BISFF advises audiences to register in advance because seating is limited.
A new market for short-film projects
The Discovery Film Market is being introduced in collaboration with Producer Bazaar.
It is intended for filmmakers with completed films, projects in development or early-stage ideas, as well as producers, distributors, investors, programmers and other industry participants.
According to the festival, participants will be able to pitch projects, discuss potential funding and distribution, explore co-production possibilities and meet prospective collaborators. The initiative is open to both established professionals and emerging filmmakers.
For Indian short filmmakers, the market could prove particularly useful because formal buyer, distributor and project-pitching spaces remain less common at festivals devoted exclusively to short cinema.
Filmmakers considering the market should nevertheless treat participation as a networking and pitching opportunity rather than a guarantee of finance, acquisition or festival selection.
Echoes conference targets film students and educators
BISFF is also launching the Echoes Film School Conference in association with RV University.
The programme will bring film students, educators, aspiring filmmakers and industry professionals together for talks, workshops, screenings and discussions about filmmaking education and the future of the medium.
The conference gives the 2026 edition a stronger educational component, while creating a dedicated route for students who may not yet have a film in competition.

The 2026 festival is expected to include work across 11 competitive and curated sections.

The festival describes its International, Indian and Animation sections as Oscar-qualifying pathways, subject to the Academy’s full eligibility requirements and the specific awards attached to those competitions.
A festival selection alone does not automatically make a film eligible for the Academy Awards. Filmmakers must win the relevant qualifying award and satisfy all other Academy rules for the applicable category and awards year.

BISFF’s submission platforms currently list 31 July 2026 as the notification date for the 16th edition.

The festival’s website states that selected filmmakers will be contacted by email and that selection information will also be published through its website and social channels.

BISFF began in 2010 as a platform for emerging filmmakers and has since developed into one of India’s most visible festivals dedicated specifically to short cinema.
Its Academy-qualifying status already makes it strategically relevant for filmmakers. The addition of a project market and film-school conference now extends its role beyond exhibition by creating more practical spaces for professional development, collaboration and industry access.
The next major announcement will be the 2026 selection, followed by the detailed screening programme, venues and industry schedule.
