Applications open on 2 November 2026, with a 29 January 2027 deadline for the latest short-film production funding round.

Cyprus’s Department of Contemporary Culture has announced a new call for short-film production support under its Basic Funding Programme to Support Film Production.

The department, part of the Deputy Ministry of Culture, published the announcement on 19 October 2026. Applications will be accepted from 2 November 2026 until 29 January 2027 at 14:00 through the Grants4Arts cinema platform. The announcement does not specify a time zone, so applicants submitting from abroad should confirm the deadline with the department.

This is a new application round within an existing funding framework. The announcement does not identify a newly created fund or an increase in the available budget.

Where to apply

Interested producers and production companies are invited to create an account at grants4arts.cy/cinema. The call directs applicants to the Department of Contemporary Culture and Cyprus Cinema Office websites for the programme’s terms, conditions and forms.

Applicants should use the specified portal rather than assume that emailing a proposal counts as a submission. Preparing documents before the opening date will leave more time to resolve questions about eligibility, category selection and supporting material.

Funding categories and published limits

The Cinema Office’s published framework includes short fiction, documentary and animation support. The currently published production ceilings are:

  • Short fiction: €30,000 for the first-funded-short category, with a 15-minute limit; €40,000 for the second-funded-short category, with a 25-minute limit. Experience requirements also apply, so these are not simply interchangeable runtime bands.
  • Short documentary: €50,000, with a maximum duration of 40 minutes.
  • Short animation: €50,000, with a maximum duration of 15 minutes.

These are ceilings, not guaranteed awards. Funding percentages and category-specific conditions also apply.

The linked regulation covers 2024–2026 and allows for a possible extension to 30 June 2027. The new call closes in January 2027, but its announcement does not explain the extension or specify revised financial terms. Applicants should therefore confirm the applicable limits before finalising their financing plans.

Check eligibility and documentation

The published rules include routes for producers and production companies, certain EU-based applicants and exceptions for debut short-film directors. Eligibility should be checked against the relevant category rather than reduced to a blanket Cyprus-company or permanent-residency requirement.

Documentation varies by category. Applicants should follow the official checklist for creative material, rights documentation, budgets and production plans rather than rely on a generic dossier.

As a practical preparation step, check that the script or project description, proposed schedule and budget describe the same production. Identify unresolved rights or financing questions early and ask what evidence is needed at application stage, rather than assuming that every agreement must already be finalised.

How proposals are assessed

The Cinema Advisory Committee, SEKin, studies submitted screenplays and proposals. It is an advisory body: its recommendations are ratified by the Deputy Minister of Culture.

The wider national funding framework includes distinct programmes for minority co-productions and independent productions. Their conditions should not be treated as interchangeable with this short-film production call.

What filmmakers should do next

Review the official call, set up the required portal account and identify the appropriate category before preparing the submission. Make a checklist from the current forms and leave time to resolve discrepancies between the announcement and linked guidance, including any additional delivery requirements.

The announcement names Marinos Christodoulou at mchristodoulou@culture.gov.cy and Yiannis Georgiades at cinema@culture.gov.cy as contacts for further information.
