Animating Success - A Conversation with Alex Safavinia, CEO of Kasra Design

In the dynamic world of animation and creative storytelling, few have managed to mark their presence as boldly as Alex Safavinia, the CEO and Creative Director of Kasra Design©. From a childhood enamoured by the charm of cartoons to leading a company that sets the bar high in explainer video production, Alex’s journey is nothing short of inspirational. Today, we delve into the creative mind behind some of the most captivating animated videos for Fortune 500 companies, discussing his journey, creative process, and the future he envisions for the industry.

Indie Shorts Mag (ISM): How did your childhood fascination with cartoons and animation inspire you to pursue a career in the creative industry?

Alex Safavinia: Cartoons and animation from my childhood kickstarted my journey into creative arts, teaching me the essentials of storytelling, character design, and audience engagement.
These early passions led me to explore my own creativity, laying the foundation for my career in creative direction. The vibrant worlds and unique styles of those animations still influence my work today. Sometimes I blend nostalgic elements with modern design and continually fueling my drive for innovative and compelling storytelling.

ISM: Can you tell us about your journey from being a motion graphic artist to becoming the CEO and Creative Director of Kasra Design©? What motivated you to establish your own company?

Alex: My transition from a freelance motion graphic artist to CEO and Creative Director of Kasra Design© began with an internship at a motion design studio, followed by freelancing and building a diverse client base.
I quickly recognized the emerging market for high-quality animated commercials, particularly with the rise of explainer videos. Seizing this opportunity, I co-founded Kasra Design©, capitalizing on this growing trend and setting a high standard in the industry.
Our focus on delivering premium animated content propelled our growth and transformed our company into a leader in explainer video production.

ISM: What is your creative process like when transforming brand messages into captivating animated videos? How do you ensure that the videos resonate with the target audience?

Alex: In our pre-production phase, we conduct thorough research on each brand, focusing on their customers and target audience.
This insight guides us in selecting the most effective animation style from our extensive range. By maintaining high standards, we ensure each video resonates with its intended audience, effectively communicating the brand’s message from the initial stages of pre-production.

Animating Success - A Conversation with Alex Safavinia, CEO of Kasra Design

ISM: As the CEO and Creative Director of Kasra Design©, what is your vision for the creative industry, and how do you work towards achieving it?

Alex: My vision for the creative industry centers on innovation and impactful storytelling. I see a future where creativity isn’t just about aesthetics but also about meaningful narratives that connect with audiences on a deeper level. My goal is to push the boundaries of traditional animation and explore new, dynamic ways to convey messages.

To achieve this vision, I focus on fostering a culture of continuous learning and experimentation within my team. We stay abreast of the latest trends and technologies in animation and storytelling, ensuring that our work is not just current but also forward-thinking. By investing in talent and encouraging creative freedom, we create an environment where innovative ideas can flourish.

ISM: Could you share some insights into the projects you have worked on for Fortune 500 companies? What were the challenges and rewards of working with such prestigious clients?

Alex: Working with Fortune 500 companies such as VISA, HP, PepsiCo, PetroChina, Petronas, Shell, and IATA offers unique challenges and rewards. Tight deadlines are a frequent challenge, requiring effective time management to ensure high-quality results.

Despite this, the rewards are substantial, including the development of long-term relationships with these prestigious clients. Their ongoing trust leads to more business from established clients with larger budgets. Additionally, our work has been recognized with numerous awards, which are a source of pride and motivation.

ISM: Animation techniques have evolved over the years. How do you stay updated with the latest trends and incorporate them into your work?

Alex: To stay at the forefront of animation, my team and I continuously learn new techniques and trends. We closely watch industry leaders, drawing inspiration and insights from their projects.

This approach, combined with regular experimentation in our work, ensures we meet our clients’ expectations for cutting-edge styles. Our focus on learning and adapting keeps us competitive and ready to deliver top-notch animation.

ISM: Winning awards such as the Best Animation award at the Los Angeles Animation Festival and the Gold Award from the Indigo Design Awards is a significant achievement. How do these accolades inspire and motivate you in your creative journey?

Alex: Winning these awards is incredibly inspiring and motivating in my creative journey. These accolades serve as a testament to our team’s dedication to innovation and excellence in animation.

The recognition from such esteemed platforms validates our efforts and encourages us to push the boundaries further. It’s not just about the accolade itself but what it represents – a commitment to superior artistry and storytelling in animation. These awards foster a sense of pride and achievement within our team.

ISM: Can you share a memorable experience or project that you have worked on as a Creative Director? What made it memorable for you?

Alex: A truly memorable project as Creative Director was the 3D animation we created for the 12th World Islamic Economic Forum in Jakarta, attended by Indonesia’s Prime Minister, Joko Widodo. With only four weeks before the event, the pressure was immense.

To ensure perfection, I spent several nights sleeping in the office. This project was unique, featuring a full 3D animation with a paper effect, a shift from the client’s usual style. The hard work paid off when everything went smoothly at the event and we received positive feedback from the client.

ISM: Collaboration is essential in the creative industry. How do you foster teamwork and collaboration within your team at Kasra Design©?

Alex: In fostering teamwork and collaboration at Kasra Design©, I focus on cultivating a culture where everyone values the power of working together. Team members are encouraged to bring a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and the ability to adapt to changing client needs.

This approach is vital in maintaining a productive and friendly work environment. We believe that egos should be set aside, as collaborative effort is the cornerstone of our success.

ISM: What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers and animators who are looking to build a successful career in the industry?

Alex: If you’re aiming for a successful career in filmmaking and animation, my advice is to start with the basics and never stop learning. Mastering the fundamental principles and being open to feedback and criticism are key to your growth.

Remember, the software is just a tool; it’s your artistic knowledge and how you apply it that really counts. Always keep an eye on industry trends and continuously explore new techniques. This approach will keep your work innovative and relevant, setting you apart in this competitive field.
