The Asian Film Awards Academy has selected 16 emerging filmmakers from around 450 applicants for its 2026 International Film Camp, with eight projects set to receive HK$300,000 each to produce new short films.
Sixteen emerging filmmakers from across Asia have arrived in Macau for the third International Film Camp, where half of the selected projects will ultimately receive substantial production funding to make new short films.
The five-day programme, organised by the Asian Film Awards Academy, runs from 18 to 22 September 2026 and combines mentorship, masterclasses and industry panels with a final pitching session.
Around 450 filmmakers applied for the 16 places available this year.
At the end of the programme, all 16 participants will pitch their projects to an industry panel. Eight filmmakers will then be awarded HK$300,000 each â approximately US$38,000 â to produce their short films.
That puts the programmeâs combined production funding at HK$2.4 million, or roughly US$304,000.
Eight Short Films Will Receive Production Funding
The International Film Camp is designed around projects intended to become narrative short films of approximately 15â20 minutes.
This yearâs creative theme is âWhen Strangers Meetâ, with filmmakers developing stories around encounters, relationships and their consequences.
Participants entered the camp with scripts, budgets and production plans before receiving individual guidance from industry mentors.
Alongside one-to-one mentoring, the five-day programme includes sessions covering the creative and business sides of filmmaking, including directing, writing, producing, funding and distribution.
The programme concludes with the pitching session that determines which eight projects receive funding.
Selected filmmakers are expected to complete their funded shorts by December 2026.
Around 450 Filmmakers Applied
The 16 participants were selected from approximately 450 applicants, according to organisers at the opening of the camp.
The programme is aimed at emerging filmmakers of Asian nationality or origin between the ages of 21 and 40.
Applicants were required to have previous filmmaking experience but could not have directed more than one feature-length film.
The selection process considered proposed short-film projects alongside applicantsâ previous work and filmmaking experience.
The scale of applications continues the strong response seen by the programme since its launch. More than 400 filmmakers applied for the previous edition, while the inaugural International Film Camp attracted more than 550 applicants.
A Route From Development to Festival Screenings
The programme extends beyond providing production finance.
The Asian Film Awards Academy says it intends to support the completed shorts through distribution and festival exposure, including incorporating funded work into its Asian Cinerama touring programme and assisting filmmakers with submissions to relevant international film festivals.
That makes the initiative particularly notable for emerging filmmakers: the eight winners receive not only substantial production funding but also an established industry organisation helping move the finished films towards audiences and festivals.
Previous International Film Camp projects have already entered the international festival circuit following completion.
Winners to Be Selected at the End of the Camp
The 2026 International Film Camp is taking place at Sands China properties in Macau with support from the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency and Film Development Fund of the Hong Kong SAR Government, alongside Sands China and Shaw Studios.
The programme concludes on 22 September, when the 16 filmmakers will have completed their development and pitching sessions.
The next announcement to watch will be the eight winning filmmakers and projects selected for the HK$300,000 production grants.
